have you tried maybe lubricating the assembly?

Did you ever get your antenna working - I too have a 97 4 Runner and have the exact problem you described. I took it to a repair shop and he estimated $300-$400 to fix it saying it was probably the antenna motor that had bust. I decided not to fix it at that cost right now.</P>

Haven`t touched it yet. Am investigating other sites for repair options. Thanks for your reply. If I find a solution that works I`ll post it.

I have the exact same problem on a '93. The antenna motor runs but doesn't retract the antenna. If I push down on it while it's trying to retract, it works. I've tried lubricating it with no avail. Let us know if you find a solution.

My 92's moto makes sounds as if it is upping and downing the antenna, yet the antenna doesn't go anywhere. Instead of paying 300-400 dollars, I pull the antenna up before getting in and push it down when parking... Another method I suggest is taking a little string and tying it to the antenna, so you could move it from the inside of the car.... har har har

300-400 dollars? You can buy the whole assembly on eBay for like 25 - 30 bucks... it's really easy to replace.

HARADA makes this antenna for Toyota. You can get one at any good radio parts shop for 60-75 $ I warn you, it is a bear to install-- but it can be done in 1-2 hrs.
