My 4runner is a 1990 with the v-6 engine.  It runs well, but I think it needs more power.  I have a 1995 Avalon with the 3.0 dual overhead cams and it makes 42 more horsepower than the 4runner.  What can be done considering emissions to increase the power available? I have considered replacing the engine with a dual overhead cam type, but I have been told by Toyota that the bell housings will not work for the switch because of differences between the dual cam engines and the 4runner transmission.

Has anybody seen/done something to increase our power situation, or will i just have to learn to get there slower.

By the way this is my first post here.  This looks like it could become a good source for information, but we will need lots more posts from the membership, and more members.

Hope to hear from some of you with ideas.

Supercharge that shizzle my nizzle.  Jeez... "Oh what can be done?  I'm an idiot... what can I do?  faster?  I'm stupid!"... just kidding.  Anyway, buy a trd bolt on supercharger!  I bet you can find one on eBay for about a grand... try it out... you can always try to turbo it out too... try to take a stock turbo off an 89-92 supra... get a cold air intake and see what it does... check out some local salvage yards or something!

You can search the California CARB database and I have found a few superchargers that are OK with my emissions people.  They are very expensive, in my opinion.  I have found a turbo charger system that is much cheaper, but is not emission legal.  It comes from Australia.

One thing that I did that got quite a bit of power, was to check my timing belt.  When a new belt is put on and the idler pulley is tightened up, there is a tendency for the passenger side bank of valves to rotate about one cog worth.  Mine was in this condition.  Once I corrected this problem there is quite a lot more power.

I am still looking for that cheap supercharger, but in vain, I think.

Maybe somebody else has had better luck.  Let us know.

Have you ever thought about swapping your engine for the newer DOHC 3.4L??  I'm talking to a guy right now about buying it... I think stock it puts out like 190 hp or something... the engine is the 5VZE.  That one has better results when looking for a supercharger... I'm not real clear yet on how difficult it is to swap, but, I've seen a lot of people that have done it... If I decide not to get this engine from this guy... I can give you his email addy! He said it will include: engine, tranny, electrical (gauges, wiring harness, computer, etc..).  Everything was "professionally" pulled from a '99 supposedly... though the tranny is manual transmission... I don't know if that makes a difference to you... Anyway... I probably won't get it... but, let me think on it a couple more days!!  Later!

I put a hopped 4.3 chevy in my runner. You have to buy an adapter kick and it takes a bit of time but it fits like a glove and now I'm pushin 250-275 horse. It isn't cheap though.

Personally I am a Toyota purist, so I dropped in an engine out of a Toyota supra for my runner. But there are lots of options out there. If you just want bolt on power try lcengineering.com, they make awesome Toyota stuff. If you want to go more extreme like an engine swap you might get some ideas from these pages, supracharged.com and offroadsolutions.com.

Hey my good man! I'm not alone. I'm disabled and on a fixed income. Just bought mine with that same problem. If you find out something a little cheaper than a s-charger or engine swap please let me know. Greatly apreciated. Thanks.
