i bought a 1988 toyota 4runner a few weeks ago from a guy that said he blew the timing belt, put another one on, and the engine wouldn't start up again. any suggestions on how i should go about this? I know it could be a big problem, but i got a nice condition 1988 4runner for 175 dollars, so it wont break my heart if a new engine is in order.

Need to set the timing back up, seriously if you have to ask you might want to take it to a shop. Not starting after a timing belt is pretty normal, you cant just slap another on and start it up. Toyotas are very good about not getting much damage when a timing belt snaps, but still possible damage (damage that wont let it start not likely) Knocking after or low power very possible.

i just did my second timing belt when i got my second runner and other than having to go through the motor to change the oil pump while i was in there it was relatively simple with your standard tools, when i installed the timing belt i put the cams where they needed to be while making sure the belt was tight in between the cams. then, i put the crank 1 tooth off (counter clockwise) then when i got the belt all where i needed it, i turned the crank clockwise! that got the belt timed and tensioned EXACTLY where it needed to be.then, it was a matter of buttoning it all back together correctly. hope this helps!
