Default 91 Octane

I'm considering purchasing a 06' 4Runner with the V8. All of the "additional features" require that 91 octane (premium) be used. Then I look at another vehicle same year/engine and it said 87 octane. What gives? Can you use the 87 and not harm the engine? Is it worth using Premium? Does using Premium help in the MPG issue?

Thanks,
KLJ.
