uh-oh... engaging 4WD?

Hey yall, I just bought a used 98 4runner SR5, V6, 5-speed w/105k miles. I took it out in the rain last night, and engaged the 4hi at like 50 MPH... The check engine light came on shortly after. I have had it in and out of 4hi with no probs before. Is it catastrophic to engage 4hi at 50mph?? Engine light is staying on... Wish it had come with an owner's manual! How do you tell if it has ADD or not?? Thanks, John

Shouldnt have been a problem engaging the 4wd, I have done it before in my 04 at 70-80mph no problems different truck same BS.

Just curious of why you would turn on 4wd in the rain? Especially going 50 I assume on the freeway?

RE: uh-oh... engaging 4WD?

i put it in 4wd because it was the first rain we had in a while (slick roads), and i was driving on a winding stretch of highway (not freeway). i had noticed the rear wheels losing traction, so i thought slowing down and shifting into 4hi would be safer.

Is the 4wd operation in my 98 and your 04 going to be the same? I have a manual shift lever, not push button 4wd. I called my buddy with a 97 4R, and he said the owner's manual states you should only engage 4hi at up to 25mph "without ADD" or 50mph "with ADD". How do I know if I have ADD??

ok, the light was due to the throttle position sensor... but still, how do i know if i have ADD?
