2002 4Runner Pulling an RV
I have a 2002 2wd with towing vcapacity of 5000# and gcwr of 8800# I am contemplating buying a used travel trailer 26 feet in length that weighs 3800# dry, probably 4200# at the most by the time I load my food, luggage, and miscellaneous items. Any feedback on whether:
1. The trailer is too long given 4runner's short-ish wheelbase.
2. I am pushing the limits of 4runner with the combined weights of loaded tow vehicle and trailer.
3. Does anyone have any experience pulling and RV and how did it go?

Thanks!!
|

its going to maxed out you will need a wieght distribution hitch and a brake controller. a tranny cooler wouldnt be a bad idea, still i will be a hell of a load for the 4runner. how sure are you its 4200#s that seems a little lite for a 26' trailer

2002 4Runner Pulling an RV
As much as I love my 3rd geb 4R, if I'm you I either treat myself to a 4th gen V8 model (7700lb tow, I believe) or find a really cool but smaller, lighter RV...

|

Having had a 27ft trailer pulled with a 1/2 ton burban, good luck, especially depending if you live out west. Those hills are tough going up you will probably make it but it will be SLOW 30-35mph on many of them. I live in Oregon and that alone really dampened our outings. I would get a truck with some 4.10's and then go. The mpg will suck towing or not but when towing the hills will not be such a factor to get over. The 4 runner would handle a lower profile tent trailer ok I would think. The tranny cooler and an oil cooler are a must a tranny temp gage is a good idea also. Brake controller a must have along with the load equalizing hitch. Good luck. |
