'87 Electronically Controlled Transmission
Last week while driving on the freeway, my 4Runner started hesitating and then I smelled an acrid odor (something electrical burning). After pulling of the freeway, it continued to hesitate and even died a couple of times. When it died it started right back up. Eventually the acrid odor when away. Now it runs fine except that I have very little power (the transmission shift poinnts are very low) and the ECT switch on the center console has no effect.
I'm assuming that either the ECT switch, or a relay or computer module may have burned up. I haven't gotten to that level of troubleshooting yet. Has anyone else experienced this? I have 1987 4Runner, 22RE, automatic transmission. |
Yeah i also think so.
It might be ECT switch that has burned out. Check the ECT switch if it is then replace it. Might solve your problem....... Thanks flat ballery |
Problem resolved itself
About 3 months after the problem happened, the ECT switch started working again, and all my shift points are back. I don't understand why.

I would check all your grounds first corrosion is the gremlin in 87 22re's.
