88 4runner engine and such

bought a 88' 4runner from a guy who blew the timing belt on it. I plugged the battery up to my charger, and the engine will crank, but not with much force. Bent valves? what should be my next step as far as getting this suv to running condition?

first off, they don't have timing belts but rather are chain driven. and from my understanding if the chain goes, so does the engine. probably bent valves maybe even a piston issue depending on how hard the piston smacked the valve

the 22re has a chain, but the 3.0 3vze has a timing belt. I have a new one already on there. but it wont start, just barely turns over.

i apologize for my assumption. i guess because my 88 is a 22re i just assumed. yes, i am that ass.

i'm not sure if that is an interference motor or not. but i am thinking its not. i can check on that tomorrow.

i'm sure this has been done but i need to ask, you made sure that the camshafts and crank were at the appropriate timing marks when installing the belt?

you could try a compression test and see if there is a cylinder down, if so you probably have bent valves

Any update?

The guy I bought it from slapped a new belt on and tried to start it up to no avail. I am getting my buddy to come out who is a full time mechanic and check timing and do a compression test. Could the timing be the cause of the motor just barely turning over, or do you think it could be a number of different things wrong with it? What i'm asking is, if I set the timing, is there a chance it could be fired back up to running condition? (bare with my ignorance for a few posts, please...)

one more question, to set the timing up, do i need to remove the belt? It wouldnt be a problem, because I have the radiator and covers off already.
