just got a new truck. 4 cylinder. turns over, fires, sputters for 2-3 seconds, then craps out. obviously this could be anything, but does this sound at all familiar to anyone?

Did it just start doing this?
What have you done to it since you got it?

If not done already I would check electrical connections - from the batery to the sensors on the engine, fuses -(fuel pump).
Check thesensor on the air filter box.

ya, we're starting to think its the fuel pump. it just doesn't sound like its getting any gas to the injector system, just fumes. haven't done much of anything yet. just got it a couple weeks ago. will check the fuses and connections though! i checked prices for a new fuel pump, $290!!!!!! if this is the case, anyone know where i could get it cheaper?

Search Ebay for part number E8023. It's available brand new for under $40.00. Or, you can pull one out of a junk yard for less. And it doesn't have to be from a 4runner. Most multi-port fuel injected cars of similardisplacement andage used the same pump (bet you didn't know that). I just snagged a 91 Mazda Protege fuel pump for my 90 4runner last week. It works great.

first and foremost, i did not know that. second question i have is regarding the type of fuel pump? is it an electric one that is in the gas tank? thanx a lot man!

It's an electric pump in the tank. On yours I believe you should be able to access it from a panel under your rear passenger seat. Pull the rear seat bottom out and pull up the carpet. There should be a large panel secured by just a few screws in the floor. This will give you access to the top of the tank. You'll see the assembly held in by I think 7 screws. Disconnect the fuel lines and wires from it, then pull the assembly out. Be careful removing the assembly from the tank, there is a plastic strainer on it which could easily break off the pump if you're not careful.
If you choose to pull a fuel pump from a junk yard car, I recomend the 90-91 Mazda Protege or 86-89 Mazda 323. The pumps on these carsare easy to get to. Just pull the rear seat bottom out and there it is.

hmmmm. thanks a ton for this! i saw some post where someone believed that was the location of the fuel filter, but as far as i can gather, the filter is under the hood, under the starter. but how you describe this, it makes sense to me. in the haynes manual i got, it makes no mention of this access from under the rear seat. is this access only present for certain years?
