Default 90 3.0 with problems

Hello All, New member here. i am having some issues with my sons 90 4runner and what better place to look for help. I will try to make this short.
He bought a 90 t4r with high milage 3.0 auto 4x4. body is very clean no rust or dents. it had a miss in it when he got it. the previus owner installed plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, MAF senser, knock senser changed engine and tranny oil and that is about all i know about this toyota. its a SR5 and everything works. just the miss and after a mile or two it will loss all power but don't cut off just set and idle. So set timing it was off. checked plugs and regapped them at .32 installed new air filter and found a rat nest in the air box. new fuel pump and filter and now it runs better for that mile or two then the samething losses power real bad like it will not take the gas if you try to force it it will pop back a little. cut it off and restart it and you are good for a mile or two again. over and over.
I did do a compression test and it was 150 mostly with one at 110 not good but don't think thats it.

any ideas that may help here.
Thanks again and this is a great site.

I have already installed a new fuel filter and pump and strainer as well as the flex connection above the tank. I think i may have found the problem. I was checking the knock sensor and pig tail and found that the temp senor wire was not connected very good but the main thing is i removed the timing cover and checked the timing marks and it looks like the left head was 3 teeth off and the right side is 1 tooth off. I have ordered a new timing belt kit and we will see if that fixes it.

Thanks.

While you're in there, you may want to replace the water pump, tensioner and a few other things. You'll have to take so much off that a little PM might be a good idea.

Good luck.

Make sure you are keeping a check on spark plugs, my 92 has cracked ceramic around electrodes twice now. That always makes it stumble upon acceleration. But post your results, I'm curious what fixes yours!

OK i installed a new timing belt, water pump and all the tensenor, the timing was off 3 teeth on the passenger side and 1 on the drivers side.
I got it timed after 2 trys. i had to pull the distributer and move it one tooth to line it up. she fired right up i had a air leak so i fixed that and set the timing. she purrs like a kitten, checked for leaks topped off the water and let it warm up. son and i whent for a ride and she ran real good for 2 miles again and engine light came on and limp mode again.
ran codes and i got a 24 and that 51 knock sensor again.
so this weekend i plan on istalling a knock sensor.
