98 4runner trailer wiring

I have a 98 4runner with what I believe is the factory towing package. When I connect any trailer to the flat 4 wire connector, the turn signals are reversed, and the brake lights do not function. The running lights are OK, and I can swap the turn signals and they will work. Does this vehicle require a converter, or has somebody in the past switched something around?

Thanks greatly for any help,
Tony

RE: 98 4runner trailer wiring

Tony, I found a aftermarket replacement converter box at the toyota dealer for 35.00. I has all the plug ins for the 4runner so connections are easy. The only work is running the wires. The converter box is located just ahead of the right taillight. If someone did a number on it the plugs may have gotten snipped off, but it sounds like the factory converter box is just fried.

Me (w/98 4runner LTD) and a guy at work here (99 4runner LTD) have same sort of problem with the stock tow package... only with our trucks, the taillights work but no brake lights and no turn signals. Did Toyota ever post a recall?
