AC control button blinking/no air

Hi, I have an 04 T4R, with 88K miles. The dash AC "on" light was blinking and manual says to take it to the dealer. Well, I did some research and tried checking the relays/fuses, which appear ok.

A clerk in an auto parts counter said it MIGHT only need freon, and light is indicating the freon is out or too low to work. He did Not hear the compressor come onwhen we tried AC check. * Would the AC compressor Not come on in this instance?

I guess I'm trying to avoid a major AC diagnostic test and then a bogus repair bill. I understand paying for service, but also know my ignorance of all things mechanical can bite me in the posterior. lol.

Please weigh in on this issue. I am thinking of going to Tire Kingdom because they are supposed to have a cheap AC check. * Anyone else have this issue or could advise and I'd be grateful, as I'm not working right now.

THANKS to all. p.s. I tried repeatedly to "search" this issue here in forums, but site kept telling my ques was too broad, but a detailed search didn't come up either. Seems odd since this should be a fairly common issue.
