A/C PROBLEM

1995 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 V6

MY A/C WASNT WORKING SO I TOOK IT INTO A SHOP. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT IT HAS FREON AND THE COMPRESSOR WORKS, BUT IT IS NOT SWITCHING ON, SO IT IS AN ELECTICAL PROBLEM. HE SPEND ABOUT AN HOUR CHECKING STUFF, BUT COULDNT SEEM TO LOCATE THE PROBLEM. THE SHOP WAS CLOSING AND I NEED MY TRUCK BACK SO THEY PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND DIDNT CHARGE ME. I PLAN ON BRINGING IT BACK TO THEM AND WAS HOPING SOMEONE HAD A SUGGESTION ON WHERE THEY SHOULD LOOK.

THE FAN RUNS AND THE AC LITE ON THE CONTROL PANEL LIGHTS UP, JUST NO COLD AIR. COULD IT BE THE COMPRESSOR?

A/C PROBLEM

I still havent had my AC check out, but I turned it on the other day and it blasted nice cold air for about five miles and then stopped blowing cold. It did the same thing today. Is it just a short or a bad compressor???

do you know if the compressor is kicking in??

A/C PROBLEM

Yes I believe the compressor is kicking on, when I flip the controls on I can hear something engaging and the cold air is almost instantly blowing and its great(in the Phoenix, AZ sun)for about 5-7 miles on the freeway and then I can slowly feel the air getting warmer, so I asume the compressor shut it self off. If the compressor didnt kick on it wouldn't blow cold air at all, is that right? So, Im trying to figure out if it is a switch thats gone bad somewhere or if the compressor is going out. Are these the symptoms of a compressor at the end of its life or something else. Thanks

A/C PROBLEM

If it was the compressor not kicking in, it would not work at all, you are correct on that one. If you were low on freon, it also wouldnt get cold at all. the compressor is ususally run on a termperature sensor just like a house is, just less acurate. Once it reaches a certain temperature, it would kick off, or stop cycling. If just sitting in traffic, say on a hot day, your compressor should kick in and out, and it should kick out hen you are attempting to accelerate, especially if doing so quickly. I am wondering if either the thermostat switch is bad, or the sensor that kicks it off for more power may be bad. Once it starts blowing cold, if you turn the truck off, and back on, will it work for a while again?

A/C PROBLEM

i am having pretty much the same issue as Tommy, except that my A/C (
AC ) kicks on and off at about 10 minute interval. i.e. Blows cold for
about 5 minutes then blows normal or 'engine hot' for about 15 minutes
then back on again. the dashboard temprature slider lever remains in
the full cold position.

the toyota dealership wants me to pay $149 just for the diagnostics, thats sad .

PLEASE PROVIDE ANY INFO. on this. is there is some kinda thermostat or
a switch that needs to be replaced and where its located.?

btw, mine is a 93 4runner 4wd v6.

thanks all,

A/C PROBLEM

--- UPDATE ---

ok, got it working.

took it to nearest firestone full service garage.

they did full inspection of AC for about 35 bucks.

told me that i had a slow leak and missing about 1 pound of freon

so they flushed out all the remaining freon, fixed the leak applied
some kinda UV leak detector etc. and re added the freon back into the
system again.

cost= about $180

the old r-12 freon is about $90 a pound... darn thats expensive.

anyway. working great now. Thank God.

A/C PROBLEM

Hi New Member here,

I have a 92 Rnr and recently had an A/C compressor replaced. Now when the A/C is onI hear a whining noise that increases/decreases wirh acceleration/deceleration.And, only when the compressor is operating. It is annoying, I took it back to the A/C repair shop and they said they replaced the compressor 3 times. and the noise is still there (why would they look for something other than the compressor after the second replacement has me baffled). Anyways I took my 4 Rnr back and am having to deal with this abnoxious noise daily. Any ideas what this could be? Some have suggested pulleys, etc......
