Car stops while in 4wd reverse...
This problem started the other day when I was backing out of a gravel drive way. The 4runner was in 4wd while I was backing out, and suddenly there was a sound like I hit a plastic trash can or something, but I know I didn't hit anything because there was nothing for me to hit, and then the car just stopped. I couldn't reverse even though I was putting more and more gas. I went forward some, and I was able to reverse a little but it stopped again at the same spot... I took it out of 4wd and then it backed up just fine! I tested this again later on on a normally paved road and the exact same thing happened; in 4wd it moves to a certain point then just stops as if I'm applying the brakes, even when I gas it. I'm wondering if this is a serious problem or maybe there's some factor I'm overlooking. Is this supposed to happen? Anyone know what could have caused this, as if disturbs me and haunts my dreams (well, maybe not the haunting part). Thanks in advance!

RE: Car stops while in 4wd reverse...
it sounds like there is an issue with the transfer case, or possibly in the electronics that control the 4wd.

Hmm... interesting... I'm also going to put out my guess and wonder if it could be perhaps the vehicle doesn't want to change into 4wd if I'm turning while reversing...

Dont use 4wd on a hard surface, all wheels are gripping and causing trans wind up.
