Default Center Differential will not disengage!!!

Just bought my mother-in-laws '02 Limited (long story...) So, I'm checking out all the functions and get to the 4x4 settings, as I live in Colorado and a storm is coming this Tuesday. I put it in L4 and press the center diff button that is _supposed_ to push in lock (and un-lock to disengage.) Well, the button does not push in and lock it just pushes in and comes out, no locking. Then, the center diff indicator light on the dash begins to flash (all 4 wheel lights and the orange center diff light.) Just keeps flashing and flashing. I did gently take it out of the driveway and drive it around in straight lines, pushing the button to try and get it to disengage. Shifted it from H to N to L4 - nothing. Help - has this happened to anyone before, or is this a service run to the shop? Also, I've read you can damage the drive system by driving on dry roads with center diff engaged. Am I going to break something driving it to the shop? Thanks...
