Check Engine/Gas Cap Question
Hi all! I'm new to the forum! I have a 98 4-Runner and the check engine light came on the other day. I called my Toyota service rep who advised me to bring it in for a $75 testing/inspection. Turns out the gas cap was a little too loose and the fumes were being picked up by the sensors.

I've asked around and some folks told me that happened with their Toyota trucks. Have any of you noticed this? Is thislike Toyota folklore?

The reason I ask is because I'm feeling a little disappointed that my professional Toyota Service rep didn't give me the heads up on this when the college intern a cubical over seems to think this is common knowledge. Not only did I pay for a diagnostic test, I alsorented a car while mine was at the shop. It's turned into the most expensive (and lengthy) oil change I've ever had!

Hey! I just bought a 98 4runner today for my 15 year old daughter. I stopped to get gas, and then the check engine light came on. I have tried and tried to tighten the cap, but light is still on. Guess I will take it back to dealer Monday or to a mechanic. HELP!
After gasing up my 91-4runner the other day,my check engine light came on. I pulled over, opened the manual and went into shock. It read....The engine has electrical problems...Immediatly bring it to a certified toyoya tech......The light finally went out when my friend told me to tighten the gas cap.....WOOOOOOOOh....

Think of the positive in this...the sensors in question are so effective, so sensitive, that they catch the slightest 'abnormality' to what they perceive should be going on.

Sometimes ya gotta walk on the sunny side of the street...

It's not just Toyotas...I had a Subaru that had the same issue...
