check engine light causing '99 to not pass emissons
Hi.
so, my mom has a 1999 4Runner. nice truck and all, but the check engine light will not go off, meaning it will not pass the GEORGIA emissions test, meaning my mom can't get her tag, so she can't drive the car.
There's nothing wrong with the car. new catalytic converter 3 months ago, and she has already spent $300ish trying to have it fixed so the light will go off and it's still on.
My question is, how do we get this light off, so the car will pass emissions. My mom needs the car for work. Right now she's driving mine, but she really needs a truck to haul around stuff in. (I have a 80's Mercedes sedan, not really working out for her)
Someone has to know how to get this damn light off. the faster we get it off, the faster she can get her car back for work, and the faster I can get MY car back, so I can get to work and partake in general teenage mischief.
Thanks for the help!

Two ways to get the light off. Disconnect the battery for around 30 minutes. Or buy a OBDII scan tool and push a button. Either way it will have to be driven for a while (50-100 miles) until it goes through all it's internal checks and clears completely for an emissions test.
Thanks dude. took it to a car shop, he hooked it up to the computer to find no problems with the car, turned off the light. We drove it for 50 miles and the light stayed off. Passed emissons, light came back on a week later... BUT, it passed
What code did he find? It must have had some code when he hooked it up. They don't throw a CEL for nothing. You need to find out what it is so it doesn't cause other issues. Like if it's a O2 sensor code. If an O2 sensor goes out, it can cause the engine to run too rich, which can ruin a catalytic converter. You said you already replaced one of those so...?
ya kball is right if its the before sensor but I'll bet dollars to donuts it's the rear sensor thats why somebody changed the Cat I had that trouble with my daughter's corolla I put a nice new sensor in because thats what I thought it was month or so later after passing emissions Daddy my Check engine light is on scanned it everything was reading good did again 2-3 months later same so I put in a toyota O2 (from internet) no problem since I bought the first sensor from Autozone for a song but the computer wouldn't tolerate it so I ended up paying for two
