getting good mileage - monitor mpg & tps

i have a 2001 3.4 and have been getting vg mileage. on the whole, i get 24mpg per tank so far. i acheived this simply by modifying driving habits by watching realtime mpg and tps ( throttle position setting ). the whole trick is once you get up to the speed you want to be at, you edge back on the accelerator until you are providing just enough fuel to keep the vehicle going at that speed. crucial to doing this was my purchase of a monitoring box called scangauge. it plugs into the odb2 port. by watching how much mileage improves as you edge off the accelerator you will be amazed at how well you do. for me, when the tps is at 19, it's just enough fuel to keep the vehicle going without slowing down on relatively flat terrain. you have to be willing to accept slower speeds when going uphill and should always take advantage of downhill spots by coming off the accelerator completely. coast whenever you can. once you start watching these two indicators, mpg and tps, you will quickly realize a significant savings in fuel consumption. -mark
