how use the 4x4
hi everyone i just bought a 1999 4runner limited 6 cyl 3.4 engine and i don't know how use the overdrive switch is in the shift level when the light in on say od off
also has a switch it says power on and off and other switch says rr diff off when i turn it on my question is when i have to use these switches i don't have the owner manual thanks for you help |
You can try emailing Toyota and asking for a new Owners manual. I did and they sent me one for my 96. If you're happy with a computer version here's a link.

The overdrive switch is for turning OD on or off. It's like an extra top gear for hwy cruising. You can leave it on all the time and it shouldn't hurt anything unless... you're towing and hitting some hills that make the transmission downshift and hunt for a lower gear. Or if all you drive is city driving that will also keep the transmission shifting too much for the OD to be on. Basically shifting causes heat and too much heat is bad for transmissions so the less shifting the better. The RR button is for the rear locker. You can only engage it in 4LO unless you modify it. It locks the rear axle so even if one of your rear tires comes off the ground the other tire will still have power to keep you going. It's only for off road use. |
