Default speedometer problems

I have a 93 4runner and my speedometer has a tendency to just drop to zero every once in awhile, it kills the cruise control and the vehicle has to be turned off and restarted to get the cruise to work again even if the speedometer has started to work again.

Is this a cable run speedometer or some kind of electrical unit?

My dad's '92 has the same problem. On my '90, the speedometer is cable run. I think that on both the '92 and '93 the speedometer is also cable run. Follow the cable from the firewall to the transmission and check to see if its connected properly.

My '93 4 runner experiences the same problems...The speedometeracts erratically going up,down and then to zero...could the sensor or cable have just come loose or disconnected because I noticed it for the first time going through some rough construction bumps on the highway. Thanks!!!

Hello,,I have a '95 4runner,,the speedo made a grinding noise when cold and then finally quit,,looks like the cable broke about 2 feet from the speedometer..I have never bothered to replace it however I just acquired a speedo cable but have yet to install it....looks like somewhat of a pain to work from the firewall to the cluster.
