Starting Issues...1987 4Runner
 

I have a 1987 4Runner, 4 cyclinder, non-turbo, 5 speed manual.

Replaced the starter a few weeks back. Started fine the first couple days. Now I have to try and turn it over usually twice. The first time it tries to turnover but to no avail. The second time it will usually turnover quite quickly, but it will lug, as if it is getting too much/too little gas. After a couple seconds it catches up and idles normally, but does smell like fuel for a minute or two after normal driving.

I am in a very dry warm/hot climate if you think that may be something to consider.

Do you think it is a fuel pump issue? Relay switch? Or something else?

Also, after i drive it, if i try to restart it within an hour or so, it turns right over. Thought this may help in your consideration.
