Default Trac off/vsc trac/ check engine on

Just got a 01 runner, and new to this forum. Sadly, we haven't even gotten the title yet, it's in the mail. The trac off / vsc trac plus the check engine light all came on at the same time. How serious is this, and how much is it gonna cost me? I don't like the Toyota dealer in my area, any ideas as to the problem. It has 95,000 miles on it, just fyi.<edited><editID>bentcent45</editID><editDate>38558.8141435185</editDate></edited>

I have an '01 with the same problem. I purchased mine in April of '05. Apparently, when the check engine light comes on, it automatically shuts off the Trac/VSC (Traction control/Variable Skid Control). You need to take it to someone that can read the diagnostic code. It could be something as simple as opening the gas cap, while the truck is running to something worse. Good luck.

All that means is that A trouble code has been set by the computer. A code is set when a given problem is experienced during 2 consecutive driving cycles. You need to have your codes scanned - it will tell you which specific malfunction(s) was/were detected. Shops can do this for a charge, but OBDII codereaders are fairly cheap and can scan and subsequently clear the code from the computer when you have fixed the root problem, making the lights go off. Mine has certainly paid foir itself... maybe you know someone who has a scanner you could use.
