Electric Detective Work -- Hatchback latch

So someone smashed in my tailgate hatch glass on my 2003 over St Paddy's weekend. The glass was replaced, but the hatchback latch became inoperative in the process, right before the guy actually replaced the glass & when he was opening & closing the door. Glass guy said glass fragments got caught in the latch. I replaced the latch mechanism myself, but it's still unresponsive when I push the button above the license plate. All other electronics in the door work (i.e. window motor), so it's not the fuse.

Any electric virtuosos out there that can tell me why my car's backside is possessed?!
