Default Help with purchase of 97 SV5

I'm looking at a 97 4Runner SV5, with 115K miles. Pretty good condition, a little rust on the under carriage the main problem seems to be the rear hatch, it won't open. A mechanic friend says that it's a common problem. Any idea if this is something that I can fix myself and how much parts are?

Anything else to look out for on this year and mileage? Also what should I expect to pay through a private transaction?

Thanks, Rob

had the same problem myself. you must remove the plastic panel it has some bolts on the grab handle, and then you pop the plastic snap on clips with a screwdriver (flat edge) then you remove the 10mm bolts that hold the metal cover. The rubber moulding that separates the glass must also be removed, be careful it has little tabs that hold it in place. examine carefully or it may bend the tabs!! Once you remove the metal cover you can see where the detached metal arm is just hanging there. Re attach and check all bolts while you're in there. It's pretty easy. You must work from inside and roll the window down in order to remove the plastic panel from rear hatch.
