Default Secondary Air Filter?

In my 2004 V6 'Runner I noticed that behind the normal removeable airfilter in the black plastic manifold housing there is also another filter that is fixed in place. Mine looked pretty dirty and was probably blocking most of the air. I had to cut 6 plastic pins to remove it from the manifold but I don't know how to clean it or if I should put it back in though. Does anyone know what that's for and if it's really needed?

Hi mate I'm a newbie too

I was just wondering does your model have two air filters in it for sure? Do you know if you be able to replace one with a performance induction kit?

It turns out the second one is called an HCF or hydrocarbon filter. It's supposed to catch fumes that drift out of the intake manifold after the engine is turned off. You can find a lot about it by searching for HC filter on the other better forum at http://www.toyota-4runner.org. I'm sure you could put on a performance induction kit if you wanted to.
