Default Timing keeps changing???

I have a 1986 4Runner with a 22re. I just put a rebuilt engine in and it seems to run great. I have had a hard time setting the timing. I shorted across the two terminals and set the timing to 5 degrees. When I unshort (lack of a better word) it, the timing stays the same and it doesn't run that great. If I set the timing by ear, it seems to run great. However, regardless of how I set it, when I go back to it a few days later, I have to play with the timing to get it started again. This doesn't make any sense to me. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Am I missing something when I try to set the timing?

Any help would be appreciated,

trbull

rebuilt engines
Posted by speedmannerTim, thanks for the advice. I ordered 5litres of the Fuchs last night.I am next racing on the 25th and will report back then.
A few of my vehicles have had leaking transfer case parts and its a pain to find good salvage transmissions. Any one got any suggestions other than salvage yards?
