trailer wiring - done it?
 

Hi there, I have a 96 4runner and am trying hook up the trailer wires. My truck came with a hitch, but no wires... so they said at Toyota that they will do it for 240$, but I'd like to take a go at it myself. I read somewhere that the rear passenger side panel must be removed... then you needthe trailer wires and a special adapter thing that converts to 4 pin. Is there truth to this? Can anybody shed some light on the subject? THanks a lot! Tony

honestly, ive not done trailer lights on a 4 runner, but i have on other vehicles. your trailer brakes should be electronically controlled. On the vehicle i did (a motor home) theere is a male plug on the trailer, and a female end mounted to the bumper. the wiring from the female end go into the harness for the LR brake light assembly, and there is a control box which adjusts the sensitivity of the brakes, and also has an emergency button by which you manually control the brakes. s that the box that you mean?

My 2000 SR5 came with the Toyota installed wiring it failed after a year so I bought a replacement wire set from Autozone and removed the Toyota adapter and installed the aftermrket kit from Autozone. It is easy and should cost about $50-60 if i remember correctly.</P>
