transfer case out at 60K miles?
Long story short...My problem is my wife drives a 2004 limited V8 4runner and used the hill decent control function to do down our gravel icy driveway last week. Her SUV is now stuck in 4-Low. I had it towed to a Toyota dealership and they can't find a quick fix. They are quoting me $4300 + tax for a new transfer case or $600 to disasemble the transfer case to see if they can see something obvious. They said they tried to apply an external power source to the actuator to see if they could get it to kick out but no luck. They said even replacing the actuator is $1000+ just for the part. The SUV only has approx 60K miles. I'm pretty sick about having to dump this much money into it already. Can anyone lend me some advice?ThanksScott

Can't help with the fix but with that few miles I'd ask to speak to a factory rep. Sounds like an electical problem. Maybe they'll cover it. Never know and doesn't hurt to try. I tried that hill decent thing once to see how it worked. I think it's more for crawling down rocks than for ice and snow. Much better control putting 4wd low and 1st gear than the decent thing IMO.
