Default TRANSMISSION O/D WON'T SHIFT

Hello and thanks for taking the time to look,

I've got a 1999 4RUNNER 4x4 with the 3.4 engine and 225,000 miles.

My touble with the tranny started this summer with it taking about 5 miles to shift into overdrive and it has gotten progressivly worse to the point of it taking 35 to 40 miles of driving to to shift into overdrive. Once it does shift into O/D it will shift perfect and smooth and I am also able to manually shift in and out of O/D with the shift handle button. Now here's the kicker---If I keep the truck running it will shift perfect all day long, but if I turn the truck off and re-start, (wether its 2 seconds or 2 days), it starts the cycle all over again. With it runng perfect, I can pull up to a stop sign-turn off the ignition-restart-and it will not shift properly for another 35-40 miles.

Toyota dealer and Aamco tranny shop show no codes or malfunction. Every blog I read talks about the engine coolant sensor and how it tells the tranny the engine is warm enough to shift into O/D. I replaced that--NOTHING. Complete tranny fluid flush--NOTHING.

Toyota and Aamco are basically scratching their heads as they both have never heard of or dealt with such a problem.

Any ideas Boys and Girls? I'm hoping to hear something new, because fixing this thing by guessing what it could be will get expensive.

Thanks,
Thomas
