Default Help wi 2004 starter issues

Help!. My 2004 4Runner is having starting problems & is at a mechanic's shop & I need to get back to him with an answer.
Specifically, on my 2004 4Runner I have always been able to just bump the key when starting & it starts. I do not have to fully rotate the key when starting.
Lately it has not started the first time on say 5 occassions over 5 weeks. There is also a whirring noise my mechanic says is caused because after the vehicle starts the starter keeps rotating.
QUESTIONS:
Do other 2004 4Runners start with just bumping the starter?
Should the starter keep rotating after the vehicle starts?

I don't know what to look for next, so I'm hoping someone can suggest some ideas or point me in the right direction. Over the past 1.5 years that I've had the vehicle, it's happened on and off, sometimes not happening for months at a time and then happening more frequently, sometimes at every stop. The cold weather does not necessarily appear to be a factor. Even though I replaced that battery and it hasn't happened since, the first time I tried to turn the engine over and over after it failed twice, it caused the battery to die completely. There may have also been a parasitic drain that I dealt with since then.
