Default Engine cleaning

Ok quick question, I need to clean my engine(Majorsand/dirt coating the entire thing). I was told that you can wash it at one of those self carwashes. Whats the best way to do this without damaging anything vital? I was also told that as long as the truck was running, you could hose it down without hurting anything. True?

Default RE: Engine cleaning

hosing while running, not true. Granted it helps, but you can also just be prepared to use an airblower after and/or turn it off and wrap up the electrical things, stay away from anything electrical especially the distributor, fuse box, alternator, etc..
