Default gen3 power antenna

Just recieved a replacemant mast for my 4runner. When I got the old one out, no cord followed it. no grinding occurs with or without the old mast in place. I slid the new one in, turned off the radio and down it went. at about 2/3 of the way down it stopped. radio on and of, still no go down![:@] . So I took it out and noticed obviously by the dirty grease it wasnt going all the way in. Should I take the whole thig apart ans see WTF, or just cut some of the old cord (bout 7 to 10 inches) and hope it works? The obvious is to cut it since it retracts and extends ok except for the length overall of the cord. maybe all I need is reassurement...
