hi My name is jimmy i am new to the forum...I just bought my 16 year old a 1997 4runner sr5 with 3.4 in it , it is in very good shape with 111000 miles on it ...Every once in a while it will sputter for a few seconds usually on excelleration but it has also done it at idle and 1 time it didnt want to start....I need someone to point me in the right direction as to what to start with ./...I checked for codes but there is not one....Thanks

 

welcome to the board! I had the same problem with my 2000 4runner and I switched out the throttle postion sensor and MAF sensor and it solved the problem. I changed the MAF senesor because I ran a K&N airfilter and the oil from the filter coated the sensor. I hope this helps you.

 

well i changed the plugs and wires and fuel filter and it solved the miss . but we have discovered a new problem , sometimes it doesnt want to start , you have to try to or 3 times and then it will start , would this be a fuel pump ????

 

How does it sound when its trying to start? Could just be a weak battery, hard to say, need more info.....

 

new battery , turns over fine just want start until you try 3 or 4 times

 

sure you got the wires hooked up right? Distributor cap? Rotor? Possible fuel pump (but not likely) usually fuel pumps work or dont work.
