Urban Runner-TomTom
I am new to the 4RunnerForum and am not happy to announce that my first 4Runner purchase in May 08has been nothing but a miserable experience. I am specifically referring to the TomTom Navigation/Stereo that comes standard with the UrbanRunner package. Here is a brief run down of what I have dealt with since May 08.
1. TomTom broke 2 weeks after I drove off the lot. Toyota Dallas and Coprorate did not know how to resolve the problem. After several weeks of calling and writing e-mails to Toyota Corp. they replaced the sim card.
2. The TomTom worked for a few weeks and then it broke again. Same issues. The card had failed. I spent endless number of hours placing phone calls and writing letters. I wrote letters to the most senior people within Toyota Corp. and not a single apology. I had to plead for a new case manager b/c she was not interested in helping me. After several weeks they replaced the card. They claim it is the final fix. I have had it a few days and am very skeptical. I refuse to plug it in to the computer like you are supposed to and I refuse to use bluetooth or the ipod function for fear of breaking it.
*I am extremely upset by the way Toyoyta Corp. has handled the situation. They are not standing behind their product. I have spent 75%+ of my time without a working stereo, navigation, bluetooth. To boot my dealer's service manager said I was to blame b/c I plugged it in to my computer. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO PLUG IT IN FOR UPDATES AND TO SET UP THE OTHER FUNCTIONS.
* I plan on pursuing the lemmon law (if applicable) if it breaks a 3rd time.
* DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ADVICE. I HAVE WRITTEN LETTERS TO THE VP OF CUSTOMER RELATIONS OF TOYOYTA CORP. I AM DESPARATE FOR A RESOLUTION. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

I have exactly the same problems with the 2008 UrbanRunner TomTom. I bought the car in June and the TomTom crashed two weeks later after I attached my iPod to the audio system. After a few hours with TomTom tech support and no resolution, the Toyota dealership replaced the memory card.
I was afraid of corrupting the memory stick so I have not used my iPod in the car since the memory card was replaced. Sure enough, 4 weeks later the TomTom is giving me the same error message as before; a flashing red X indicating the memory card is corrupted. I will take it back to the dealership and I expect them to replace the memory card, but with a life span of a matter of weeks, this could be a long term problem. Does anyone else have this issue?

As indicated in my original forum posting, my TomTom broke not once but twice shortly after purchasing the UrbanRunner. I wrote numerous e-mails and letters to both my dealer and Toyota Corporate. My dealer was willing to work with me but they take direction from Toyota Corporate. Here is where the problem lies, Toyota Corporate customer support technicians no absolutley nothing about the TomTom. They are no help at all. I opened a Case# and was assigned a case manager. My only advice is to continuously bug your case manager and ask to be put in contact with a supervisor. My dealer was willing to work with my request to have an after-market Kenwood Navigation installed but Toyota Corporate balked at the idea. They refused to pay for it. I waited for months and they very recently installed a 3rd SIM card in the TomTom. They claim it is the 3rd generation chip and will resolve all problems. I must admit that I have not had any subsequent issues yet. Please note that it has only been a few weeks. It usually takes a few before it crashes. I am on my 3rd chip and if it breaks again I will re-open my case# and start all over again. I have given Toyota horrible reviews on the TomTom but I am not sure if they will take notice. If anyone has any recommendations re: an awesome after-market navigation system please respond. I am saving up for something to replace the TomTom even if I have to pay for it myself. Thanks and best of luck.
We are having the same issues with our TOMTOM. The first two times we took it to the dealer because the AUX port for the stereo and problems turning it on they basically told us that there was nothing wrong. They said they AUX part was not supposed to work. The GPS was working alright so we were living with its short comings. Of course as things go the GPS failed while we were on a trip to South Carolina hundreds or miles from home. We took it a local dealer who was aware of the the problem. After seeing so many issues we have asked Toyota to replace the TOMTOM with the Toyota Nav which is great and also the radio will work again. Of course Toyota is pushing back as this point but we will keep you posted.
